The Mexican Village made the LA Times Essential Classic List!

The Mexican Village

Mexican Cuisine
What began as a family operation remains so — and that goes for both ownership and the recipes in Koreatown’s hacienda-style Mexican Village, the kind of restaurant where papel picado hangs from the rafters and one can wash down a sizzling fajita platter with more than 50 tequilas and mezcales. Founded by Abel Olivares Sr. in 1965, this margarita-happy spot with weekly live entertainment and a lengthy list of combo-plate classics was the culmination of the chef’s years in and out of various kitchens, including a few of his own: L.A. hot dog stand Abel’s Place and Cantamar Restaurant in Baja, among others. His menu just west of Silver Lake incorporated recipes from his wife, Maria Garcia Olivares, which are still served today by three of the couple’s four children, who now run the Mexican Village together. There’s live entertainment multiple nights of the week, but the draws here are the many food and drink options — including a list of cocktails known as the “avoid gridlock specialty drinks” — in a festive setting. Can’t decide on a flavor or style from the bevy of margaritas? We loved the tangy, tart tamarind.

OPEN SINCE 1965

“The food is incredible ( the mole!!). The margaritas are extraordinary (try the tamarind!!) And the hospitality is above and beyond. This is a family restaurant. Abel, the owner, is really a wonderful person. Love it here!!!”

“Some of the best Mexican food we’ve had! Loved the Chile Rellano (which I only like at certain places.) cheese enchilada was delicious and the best guacamole we’ve had in a restaurant. Sooo good!! Owner is very attentive. Second generation restaurant. You won’t regret checking this place out. If I lived here I’d be a regular.”

Heather T

“Everyone here was nice attentive and quick. Food was super fire  I would definitely come back over and over again. The drinks were even better so smooth you don’t want to stop. Give it a try!”

Joseph S.

“Absolutely love this restaurant! Delivery service has always been incredible, and Omar is the best! When we used to dine in, we’d always be seated out on their patio, for happy hours. Such a fun restaurant with a great menu!”

Eduardo S.

“Authentic Mexican food, nice place for eat, dance and drink . I went to have a dinner with my family in Tuesday. They have comedy show. It was fun.”

Dina J

“Great family owned 🇲🇽 Mexican restaurant.

Abel was our server and he was wonderful.

The 🥑 food was delicious and very fresh.

Nice atmosphere access would definitely go back!”

M Rice

“I love the Mexican. They serve big portions. The music makes me want to dance all night. They mix it up between the hottest beats to eighty’s music, to the classic cumbia. The drinks are affordable. The tequila bar has many options including mezcal. My favorite drink is the homemade tamarind margarita that pairs well with any dish, especially the fajitas. The guacamole is always fresh. Did I forget to mention their flan is made with real ingredients and is heavenly? There is parking and plenty of lighting. For those that wish fresh air, there is plenty of out door seating in the patio. Come check out a real Mexican restaurant!”

– Veronica S.

“Family owned and operated for 57 years. Unlike any place because we have dancing every night. We serve authentic old school Mexican comfort food. We want all our guest to feel the Olivares hospitality:  fun, familiar, and warm.”

– Abel O. (manager)
